On Tuesday April 12, (surprisingly not on 04.20) the Access to Medical Cannabis Bill was passed in Victoria making it the first state to legalise cannabis (again strictly for medicinal purposes… no need to starting booking a flight!).
Victoria is now only days away from planting its very first cannabis plants. However, the plants obviously can’t be grown outside like any other crop (we imagine some might go missing). The plants will instead be guarded around the clock in an undisclosed, top-secret location! (Ooooooo!)
But what does this mean for the whole Sydney vs. Melbourne battle for best city? Will this give Melbourne the edge?
Well Sydney (as far as we know) was the first city in Aus to get a stoner café for those with the munchies (appropriately named ‘D’ Munchies!). With its weed murals and interesting flavour combinations, 'D' Munchies definitely earned Sydney some points on whatever points system there is for a city’s coolness.
But Victoria has well and truly trumped that! By completely legalising medical cannabis, Melbourne will now become a shrine for all the pro-green, 420-lovin' fans.
But who exactly will have access to the drug? Well Victorian premier Daniel Andrews stated that around 450 children with severe epilepsy would have first access in early 2017. Other patients who suffer from cancer, multiple sclerosis and HIV will gain access later on.
There is no doubt that Victoria has made history here. I guess we just have to wait and see if this has got the ball rollin' for legalised cannabis everywhere in Oz.
