Two months ago, Ryan Collins was named as the creepy person responsible for hacking into the private accounts of celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna and Kate Upton, to steal private information including nude photos.
Now, the 36-year-old hacker has plead guilty and faces a maximum of 5 years in a federal prison.
The Associated Press reported that Collins “was accused of gaining access to more than 100 Google and Apple accounts from November 2012 to September 2014.” He used the emails to pose as Apple or Google, asking for usernames and passwords. Once he had access to their account, Collins “downloaded the entire contents of the victims’ Apple iCloud backups.”
These images ended up on 4chan and Reddit, however the posting has never successfully been linked back to Collins.
According to The Associated Press, Collins “pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to one count of gaining unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information.”
Jennifer Lawrence spoke about the hacking in November 2014, telling Vanity Fair, “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world.”
“It is a sexual violation,” she continued. “It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these Web sites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside.”
Kate Upton's rep said, “This is obviously an outrageous violation of our client Kate Upton’s privacy. We intend to pursue anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible.”
While Kirsten Dunst tweeted a simple, sarcastic "Thank you iCloud" when she heard of the hack.
Here’s hoping Ryan Collins receives the sentence he deserves for violating these women's rights.
