Robyn Lawley is one busy supermodel.
The 26-year-old Australian made history as the first ever "plus-size" model to work for Ralph Lauren and Sports Illustrated. She's been the cover star of magazines including Marie Claire and Vogue Italia, and is an Australian ambassador for Pantene. She launched her own cook-book, Robyn Lawley Eats, in 2014, and she even has her own Beyoncé approved swimwear line.
The girl's got a LOT going on. We sat down with the star to talk about all things Robyn Lawley and *spoiler alert* we're in love.
The star spoke about her latest collection for Robyn Lawley Swimwear, and so far it's all good news.
“We are just nailing it now in terms of fit," she says, "The newest collection is by far the best we’ve ever done. My biggest thing with my swimwear is that I want a good fit. I want it to be comfortable and supportive. I’m a big advocate for listening to the customer, so we did ask groups of girls what they wanted and what they’re missing out on.”
The swimwear line is a great mark of pride for Lawley, so you can only imagine how stoked she was when fellow Sports Illustrated model, Ashley Graham, wore one of her designs in the magazine’s 2016 Swimsuit Edition.
“I got the call that there was going to be another curvy girl [in the magazine] and that they wanted my swimwear. It was just amazing to see, it was a dream come true!”
It seems Sports Illustrated is all about making her dreams come true. In 2015 Lawley made history as the first "plus-size" model to grace the pages of the magazine, and she was ecstatic to be asked back for the 2016 issue.
“I was so thrilled! It was hilarious, fun and refreshing. It was so good, and I was so in awe that I got it twice.”
However, it hasn't all bean easy. Lawley has long fought for her place in the industry as an "unconventional" model.
"Fashion should be involving the people who are actually buying the fashion I've never understood it," she says, "It’s two steps forward, a million steps back. You know, it’s just not happening in the mainstream fashion world. In the last few years, really, they were just using maybe one plus size model in a show, but they’re not even doing that now. These models are hardly used."
All the hands up emoji's for you, girl! 🙌🏼
"Fashion should be involving the people who are actually buying the fashion. I’ve never understood it.”
But just because Lawley thinks the industry need to change, doesn’t mean she has a problem with the current 'it' girls.
“I think Gigi and all those girls are lovely. I’ve met them, they’re really sweet, and they are absolutely rocking it. I have no qualms with what they’re doing. Gigi is a little bit curvier than most and she works out a lot and is quite strong, which is great to see.”
She is NOT about pitting women against one another, she’s just looking for equal representation.
Lawley is also unimpressed by the twitter backlash against her fellow model, Chrissy Teigen, who has been criticized by twitter trolls for her role as a new mum, most recently for enjoying dinner with her husband, John Legend.
“That is so stupid! I mean, good for them [Chrissy & John]! Go out, have fun! You need a break and you need time to spend being in love with your partner. I definitely don’t follow that nasty logic [of twitter trolls]. Fortunately for me, it’s mostly been positive. I’ve never experienced anything like that."
Lawley has her own 1-year-old daughter, Ripley, and is thankful she's managed to avoid such negative pressure. “I don’t think about things like that," she says, "I just try to be me and do the best I can. There is a lot of pressure, and I am human at the end of the day. I just believe in being the best you can be.”
And, let's face it, right now it's pretty great to be Robyn Lawley. After the last few wildly successful years, she's now working with Pantene as a spokesperson for their new 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner.
"When they approached me I was like 'hell yeah' because I’ve used the Ice Shine for years. Now they've released this product, the 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner, and I’ve tried it all month and it’s working amazing. I think people will be really excited about it."
Lawley deals with some major hair stress as a model, and claims the new product has helped get her enviable tresses back on track.
"In my job, having long hair that is frequently styled leaves it feeling dry and damaged. With a new baby I am always on the go and don't have time for salon treatments," says Lawley, "it leaves my hair feeling healthy, glossy and damage-free."
When it comes to her hairstyle though, she prefers to keep things simple.
"I’m pretty basic, I haven’t got much time. You know I love sea salt spray, I do a nice top knot with sea salt spray for the daytime. I think casual is my hairstyle. You don’t want to be spending too much time on it." Agreed, babe.
Up next for the gorgeous supermodel is the launch of her next swimwear collection, modelling in New York, and some seriously well-earned family time. Keep doing you, Robyn!
