Leonardo DiCaprio took a private jet to New York to accept an award for his services to the environment, then immediately afterwards he hopped back on his jet and returned to Cannes.
If you’re thinking “well that’s a bit luxe for eco-friendly Leo,” then you’re not the only one.
Leo has come under fire from fans and fellow environmentalists, with some even going so far as to label him a “hypocrite.”
The actor was in NYC to attend the Riverkeeper Fishermen’s Ball, where he was honoured for his contributions to keeping the city’s rivers clean.
Your boy Leo has spent much of his own time and money fighting to preserve our environment, this year alone pledging $15million of his own money to support numerous organisations at the World Economic forum.
A rep for the actor spoke to US Weekly about the controversy, saying “"He was asked to speak at both Riverkeeper and amfAR events, but the only way to attend the two fundraisers was to hitch a ride with flights that were already planned. Leo helped both events raise millions, donated his own funds, auctioned off his house and had speaking roles in both programs."
Now, to be clear, Leo flew back to Cannes to attend the amfAR Cinema Against Aids Gala, where he auctioned off a week long stay at his Palm Springs residence for $500,000. He was going there to do some more good! However, that doesn't mean people will be forgiving the star any time soon.
"I love to fly and pollute air," wrote one fna on Twitter, while another said, "I guess destroying the environment for a pat on the back is a worthwhile cause," YIKES!
Environmentalist Robert Rapier told The New York Times' Page Six:
"[Leo] demonstrates exactly why our consumption of fossil fuels continues to grow. It’s because everyone loves the combination of cost and convenience they offer. Alternatives usually require sacrifice of one form or another. Everybody says, 'I've got a good reason for consuming what I consume' ... It's the exact same rationalization for billions of people."
#AWKS! Well what do you guys think, is Leo a big old hypocrite? Or is he just trying to do some good for this world?
